Overview
Body contouring includes operations aimed at changing contours and removing excess tissue. Addressing skin and addressing localised fatty tissue serve different goals; in some cases, they are considered together.
Types and aims
Abdominal area
Abdominoplasty is surgery of the abdomen. The possibility and extent of correction depend on tissue condition and an individual assessment.
Localised contours
Liposuction involves removing localised fat deposits. Choosing the area and method requires an in-person assessment.
After weight changes
After significant weight loss, concerns may involve excess skin in several areas. The sequence and extent of correction are discussed individually.
At the consultation
Explain the changes and questions that matter to you. Topics to discuss include:
- The area and nature of the desired changes
- Excess skin and localised volume
- Weight changes and previous surgery
- Work, physical activity and travel plans
Frequently asked questions
Can liposuction replace weight loss?
Liposuction removes localised fat deposits and changes the contours of selected areas. It is not a treatment for obesity and does not replace diet and physical activity. Overall body weight and individual areas of fat are different concerns.
Will stretch marks disappear after a tummy tuck?
A tummy tuck does not remove stretch marks across the entire abdomen. They may be removed along with the area of excess skin taken away during surgery. Their location in relation to the planned area of skin removal therefore matters.
Why is skin removal discussed after substantial weight loss, rather than just fat removal?
After a large amount of weight loss, the skin and other tissues may lack the elasticity to conform to the body's new size. Sagging skin is therefore often the concern. Surgical correction may involve the abdomen, arms, thighs and other areas, depending on where the excess tissue is located.
Questions to ask
- Which tissues are relevant to my concern?
- How do the correction options differ in their goals?
- What should be considered when planning recovery?
- Which risks and limitations are discussed before surgery?
General information does not replace an individual medical assessment. Indications, risks and the treatment plan are discussed with the surgeon.
